Since the civil war began in Yemen in 2015, the conditions there have only gotten worse and worse. So when you think of refugees, typically you think of people FLEEING the country and not trying to get in.
It’s estimated that up to 290,000 refugees have entered Yemen since 2013: 80% from Ethiopia and the rest from Somalia. Some of the migrants hope to pass through while others need a place to stay. The numbers of refugees entering Yemen has been slowly increasing each year, but the refugees might not be fully aware of the dangers they’re getting themselves into.
The UN Refugee Agency has limited operations in Yemen due to the war, but they are trying to raise awareness about the dangers facing refugees crossing into Yemen. More information on the UNHCR website.
The migrants are lied to about what to expect in Yemen, boats sink, and people are tortured. Many do not even make it.
